What baking soda and vinegar actually do
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and household vinegar is about 5 percent acetic acid. Together they make water, a salt called sodium acetate and carbon dioxide gas. The foam gives a little mechanical scrubbing and the mild acid loosens some mineral film.
Hair is protein and will not dissolve in this mixture. Cooled grease is fat, and the mixture does not cut it. Roots, wipes and paper towels are untouched by it. That leaves soap scum, light biofilm and odor as the jobs it can handle.
For a maintenance flush, pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain, follow with half a cup of vinegar, wait 15 minutes and rinse with hot tap water. Do it monthly in a slow-draining bathroom sink and you may never need more.
Clog type and what to expect
The right tool depends on what is blocking the pipe, not on how much you want the home remedy to work.
| What is in the drain | Vinegar and baking soda | Better tool | Call a plumber when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soap film and odor | Helps a little | Hot tap flush, then an enzyme cleaner | The smell returns within days |
| Hair in a tub or shower | Does not dissolve it | Drain strip or a hand auger | Slow flow returns within weeks |
| Grease and food in a kitchen line | Minimal effect | Hot soapy water, then a snake | Two fixtures back up together |
| Mineral crust on aerators and shower heads | Soaking in vinegar works | Soak the removable part, not the pipe | Pressure stays low after cleaning |
| Wipes, paper towels, feminine products | No effect | Snake or camera inspection | The toilet or floor drain gurgles |
| Roots in an outside line | No effect | Cable cutting or hydro jetting | Backups repeat |
Hot water and PVC, where the limits are
Most home drain pipe is PVC or ABS plastic. Hot tap water at 120 to 140 degrees is fine for it. A kettle at a full boil is 212 degrees, and that can soften joints, warp a trap and crack a toilet bowl or porcelain sink.
The risk is greater for pipes you cannot see, such as runs under a slab or inside a wall, because a softened joint may not leak until months later. Pour hot tap water instead of boiling water, and never use a kettle on a toilet. Cast iron tolerates heat but that does not make boiling water a good plan.

These mistakes turn a slow drain into a repair call.
- Mixing vinegar with a commercial drain cleaner. Many contain lye, and the reaction can splash, heat and release fumes.
- Combining vinegar with bleach anywhere near a drain. That releases chlorine gas.
- Pouring chemicals into a fully blocked drain. They sit in standing water, and a plunger or snake later can splash them back at you.
- Sealing the drain and letting the foam build. Gas needs somewhere to go.
- Repeating the treatment daily. If three tries have not moved the water, the clog is not the kind this mixture handles.
What the sewer district and city say about drains in Herriman
Jordan Basin Improvement District, which runs sewer for Herriman, says only human waste and toilet paper belong in a toilet. Baby wipes, wipes sold as flushable, feminine products, rags and cotton swabs cause backups. If a toilet keeps clogging, a flushed wipe is the usual cause, and no vinegar dissolves it.
The district also says never to pour oil or grease down sinks, toilets or garbage disposals. Let it cool, solidify it in a jar or can and put it in the trash, and use strainer baskets. Cooled grease hardens in the trap and downstream, which is why vinegar rarely helps a kitchen line.
JBID says that if turning off all water use stops the backup, the problem is in the house plumbing or the private lateral. The owner is responsible for that line, and the district states that it is against the law for it to work on private property. So when two or more drains back up, shut off water use and call a plumber.
Herriman's water page calls local water very hard, with wells at 25 to 60 grains per gallon and Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District supply at 10 to 12. Mineral crust on aerators and shower heads is where vinegar earns its place, and the city itself suggests vinegar or citric acid in dishwashers.
A sensible order of attack
Escalate one step at a time and stop when the water moves.
Clear what you can see
Pull the stopper, wipe the hair from the pop-up and lift the strainer. Many slow sinks are fixed here.
Plunge properly
Use a cup plunger on flat sink and tub drains and a flange plunger on toilets. Seal the overflow with a wet rag and push in steady strokes.
Use a hand auger
A 25 foot hand auger reaches past the trap to the clog. Crank it in, feel for resistance and pull out what you hook.
Try the maintenance flush
Once water moves, use baking soda, vinegar and hot tap water to scrub the film left behind.
Call for drain cleaning
A cable machine with cutting heads clears what a hand tool cannot. For heavy grease or roots, hydro jetting scours the pipe wall with high pressure water.
Whichever route you choose, a repeat clog within weeks is a sign of damage or a belly in the pipe, not of a stubborn blob.
Neighbors share the same rules
The district serves Bluffdale and South Jordan as well as Herriman, so the same what-not-to-flush list applies. South Jordan's stormwater page also advises against pouring wash water or liquid waste into streets and storm drains. Treat every pipe outside the house the same way, and keep chemicals out of the gutter.
Questions homeowners ask
Will Jordan Basin Improvement District clear a clog in my house drain?
No. JBID states that the private line from the house to the district main belongs to the owner, and that it is against the law for the district to work on private property. The district handles its own mains. Test with the district's own rule, since a backup that stops when all water use stops is in the house line.
Can I use vinegar and baking soda in a garbage disposal?
It is safe in small amounts and can freshen odors. It will not dissolve grease or food packed in the trap. Run cold water and the disposal afterward to carry the loosened film away.
Does vinegar damage pipes?
Household vinegar at 5 percent is mild for PVC, copper and cast iron. Repeated soaking can wear rubber seals and gaskets over time, so flush with water afterward and do not leave it sitting in a drain for hours.
How often should I do the maintenance flush?
Monthly is plenty for a slow bathroom sink. A kitchen line that handles grease needs better habits, not more vinegar.
Why does the drain smell after I treat it?
The mixture loosens film and can free trapped odor. If the smell persists, the trap may be dry, a vent may be blocked, or the clog is farther down the line.
Is a store-bought drain cleaner a safer choice?
Not usually. Many contain strong chemicals that stay in standing water and are hazardous to pipes, skin and eyes. A plunger or auger is cheaper and safer, and it works on the clogs that chemicals cannot.
