Before we arrive, four moves at your Riverton house
Most of the damage in an emergency happens in the first hour, and most of it can be slowed with your own hands.
Shut off the main
Find the house shutoff valve, usually where the line enters the basement or garage, and turn it clockwise until it stops. In Riverton the city meter sits in the park strip. Leave that alone, because the city asks owners to call the Water Department for a street-side shutoff.
Kill power near water
If water is falling through a ceiling or pooling around outlets, flip the breaker for that room. Never wade into standing water to reach a panel. If the panel is in the wet area, stay out and tell us on the phone.
Clear the area
Lift rugs, electronics and boxes off wet floors and move children and pets to a dry room. Open a drain plug or door if water is trapped in a low spot. A wet vac handles a shallow puddle but not a flooded basement.
Call the line
Dial (385) 488-1892 and tell dispatch what you see, what you smell and whether the water is stopped. For a gas smell, leave the house first and call 911 from outside before you call us.
What the Riverton water system means for your pipes
Riverton City runs its own culinary water, but the state's water element says JVWCD supplies 100% of it by contract. Five of the city's six deep wells sit idle over water-quality concerns. For you, that means the water at the tap is district water.
JVWCD reports a system-wide total hardness average of 182.4 mg/L, about 10.7 grains per gallon. That is the supplier's average across its whole system, not a Riverton tap reading, and the range it lists runs from 16 to 381 mg/L. Scale builds on heating elements and tank bottoms, so test your own tap and flush the heater yearly.
The same document notes two pump stations added on 11800 South, at 3300 West and 4285 West, to fix low pressure at peak demand. If your pressure drops, a failed pressure reducing valve or a partly closed shutoff is a common cause, and our water line repair page covers the rest.
Which kind of failure are you looking at?
| What you see | Likely source | Who owns the fix | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meter dial spinning with every tap off | Leak on the house side or in the yard line | You, from the meter outward | Close the house main and re-check the dial |
| Sewage in the lowest floor drain or tub | Blockage in the lateral or the street main | You for the lateral, JBID for the main | Stop all water use and see if it clears |
| Rusty puddle under a water heater | Tank wall corroded through | You | Shut the cold supply valve, cut gas or power |
| Geyser at a sprinkler head or soaked lawn | Broken head, swing joint or valve | You | Close the irrigation shutoff, then call |
| Water bubbling up in the street | City main or service line past the meter | City, up to the meter | Report it to the Water Department |
If no row fits, describe it to dispatch and we sort it out on the phone.
Secondary water is the Riverton wrinkle
Riverton operates a pressurized irrigation system on top of its culinary water. Four canal companies supply it, so the start date moves, though service typically runs from about May 1 through October 15. Residents must shut their secondary valves by March 15, and the city says it is not responsible for damage from valves left open past that date.
A valve left open in a cold March is how a buried irrigation line splits, and the leak shows up as a soft lawn in April. Our leak detection work uses acoustic listening and pressure testing to find the break without trenching the whole yard.
The city offers two irrigation hookups, secondary-only or a dual system with a backflow assembly, and bars stop-and-waste valves in the park strip. Backflow assemblies need a certified test at installation and every year after.

Call (385) 488-1892How an after-hours Riverton call goes
You call
A person answers the 24/7 line and asks what happened, where in the house, and whether the water is off.
We triage
A running sewer backup or broken supply line ranks above a slow drip.
A plumber is sent
A licensed plumber is dispatched when one is available. We do not promise an arrival time.
You hear the price
The plumber gives a clear price before any work starts, and flags any permit the repair needs.
Sewer backups and the lateral you own
Riverton's sewer belongs to Jordan Basin Improvement District, not the city. JBID's guidance is simple. If the backup stops when all water use stops, the blockage is in your house plumbing or your private lateral, and you pay for that fix. If it keeps coming back with nothing running, the main may be the problem, and JBID's after-hours line is 801-243-8492.
With 84.9% of Riverton homes owner-occupied, most of the people calling own the pipe between the foundation and the street main. We clear those with a cable machine first, then hydro jetting if roots or grease have narrowed the bore. A camera run through sewer inspection shows the cause so you are not paying to clear the same clog twice.
JBID also says sewer backup is not automatically covered by homeowner insurance, so ask your agent before you need it.
Cold snaps and the 30 inch number
The city's design criteria list a 30 inch frost depth, measured from the bottom of a footing. That is a structural rule, not a promise about where your water line sits, so ask the Riverton Building Department what burial depth applies to a new line.
Freezes hit what the soil does not protect, such as hose bibs, garage supply lines and sprinkler stubs. A frozen pipe often shows no leak until it thaws. Our burst pipe repair work cuts out the split section and replaces it with new copper or PEX.

Riverton emergency questions
Do you cover every ZIP code in Riverton?
Yes. Most of the city, about 74% of its area per the Census overlap, is ZIP 84065, which includes City Hall on Redwood Road and the Water Department on Sanborn Drive. About 26% of the city falls in ZIP 84096, the same ZIP Herriman uses, so that part of Riverton shares a ZIP with our home base.
We do not assign street ranges to either ZIP. If you are unsure which applies, give dispatch your street and cross street.
Is emergency service available in Riverton?
Yes. The line is open 24/7 and a licensed plumber is dispatched when one is available. We do not promise an arrival time, but we tell you honestly what to expect on the call.
Do you handle water heater emergencies at night in Riverton?
Yes. For a leaking tank, shut off the cold supply and the gas or breaker, then call. Riverton requires permits for work on plumbing systems, so ask the Building Department whether a tank swap needs one. Our water heater replacement page covers the options.
Who do I call for a water main break in the street?
The Riverton Water Department handles the main and the line up to the meter. Its after-hours water emergency line is 801-558-1814. Once water is on your side of the meter, call us.
Can I shut off water at the meter box myself?
No. The city asks owners not to operate the shutoff inside the meter box and to call the Water Department instead. Close the valve inside your house.
